Transmission problems. Have codes.

94 Intrepid 3.5L with a couple hundred thousand miles on the ticker. This is a friends car that I'm trying to help out. I took my Snap-on 2500 scanner to his house and pulled three trans codes. 36, 53 and 54. The car won't shift out of first gear. Although, it did for me once. I'm not terribly savvy at using this scan tool for transmission functions but I did notice that when it did shift for me, once, the scanner showed it got to 4th gear. I came to a stop and the scanner still said 4th gear but I didn't seem to have any trouble getting the car moving again. The definitions the scanner gave were:

36: Fault immediately after shift
53: Ratio error third gear
54: Ratio error fourth gear

From the codes you have posted it appears to be a internal transmission problem according to the 94 FSM.

When was the last time oil and filter were changed? Check to see if there are any metal filings on the magnet in the tranny pan. Use ATF+3 or 4 fluid only. Have you checked the input and output sensors and their wring connections?
