I have been working on a buddies 99 sunfire. The problems that we have been having have been intermitten. I think that the fuel pump needs to be replaced. But I would like to do a complete diagnosis before having him send the 250 bucks for a new pump. I would like to test the fuel pressure on the cat but I am not sure on how to do that. I Have seen on diagrams the the place to test the system is between the fuel filter and the fuel rail. Has anyone done this before and if so, can you give me any tips on performing this step
thanks

There is a valve on the fuel rail that has a valve that looks liek a tire valve stem Not sure where it is located on the Sunfire though or how easy it is to get to. You need to buy or borrow a fuel pressure gauge Available at (Autozone Etc.) and hook it up to that. I recommend getting a Haynes or Chilton Repair manual for the car. In the repair manual they have the pressure range and the test proceedure to help identify whether it is the fuel pump or not. Good luck..

do you have the mpfi? if so on the rail theres a cap you take off then it looks like a valve stim. if you find it and take cap off and push on the stim and see if it sprays out good. if it dose it's not fuel pump if you hardly get any out of it then i would say fuel pump. but i would get gage at autozone to see the pressure.

This car unlike others does not have the fuel rail test port. Has anyone ever tested athe fuel pressure on a car without a test port?
