92 RS problems

I have a 92 RS that stalled on me and wouldn't start. I could get it to fire up with starter fluid, and then rev the engine, but it would eventually sputter and die. It's full of gas, and the fuel pump was replaced less than 4 years ago, twice. I have had problems, i assume due to the key, starting. Sometimes I turn the key and it just clicks like the battery is dead. I had the car towed and when it got to the shop it fired up and the guy drove it onto the flatbed to be towed further. It then started again once it got to the shop. What is causing the car to occasionally not turn over, and what may have caused my issue with it not running today? May they be related?
