I'm looking for a better alt to support my amp and if i'm not mistaken didn't the police package caprice come with a 140 amp alt or something like that? If so then thats great cause i can likely find one cheap from a junkyard or something.

120 amps is what the 9C1 (Impala in 1983, not Caprice) would have. The 120 amp unit is a Delcotron 12SI unit and not the 10SI that's in your car. It's physically larger and will require a different mounting bracket, though the wiring will plug right in.

So i'm assuming that the alt in my car is what 78 amps or close to that?

It should be stamped on the side of the alternator case. Sometimes you have to remove the alternator to see it. a 78 amp unit would say 78A,.... 63 amps would be 63A, etc.
If you cannot find a police package version, there was a 96 amp 10SI unit that is pretty common.
