EZ Lube Jiffy Lube in the Spotlight...Again

NBC channel 4 in LA is running yet an undercover expose on EZ Lube and Jiffy Lube lube centers. This time they are focused on engine, fuel injector, and transmission flushes. This link explains it all. Not sure the video will work for you but the narrative is there for all to read. The bottom line - don't let them tell you a "flush" is recomended or part of scheduled maintenance on your car. Manufacturers don't recommend them and some won't cover damages caused by them.

I dont know what they do for the "engine flush" but I am a firm believer in the transmission service. I have 2 Ford E250 vans where I work and I have the transmission fluid and filter changed every 30,000 miles, one is a 2000 with 178,000 miles and the other is a 2002 with 205,000 miles, both still drive like they day we bought them. I dont know if anyone has seen on of the machines they use to change the transmission fluid, but it is a big plastic clear cylinder with a piston , the old fluid on the bottom and the new fluid on top. One of the cooling lines is disconnected and the machine is put in series with the cooler so that the old fluid will go into the bottom, and push the new fluid in the transmission when the vehicle is started. Even after only 30,000 miles, you can see a big difference in the old and new fluid.

I dont see any way that this can damage a transmission, unless there is something I am missing????

I know a transmission shop that does lots of valve body cleaning and rebuilds due to flushes with the machine. The machine pushes the dirt, metal shavings and clutch material in the valve body.I have replaced one transmission in a 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo due to a flush with the machine.I am a huge believer to change the fluid and filter only and do not flush with the machine. Most oil change places do not check fluid levels at all and I have seen this,a burned up rear end replacing the ring and pinion including the bearings in a Dodge Durango since the oil change place at the dealership did not check the fluid level in the rear end at all.Another one was a burned up 5 speed manual Mazda in a 1993 Ford F150 4x4,the oil change place did not check the fluid level and only had a cup of fluid in the transmision. The oil change places don't know checking the fluids in rear and front ends, transfer case if the vehicle has one is a must during an oil change.

My father did put a Jasper reman in a Chevy Malibu too,the oil change place put in the wrong oil filter and it blew up.The rods were pounding and oil went out faster than putting the oil in.

Maybe there is a different machine that flushes the fluid out? I cant see any way that this machine can do any damage, there is no power applied to the machine, it uses the pump in the transmission to do the work and it does not force anything in or out of it.

I guess I am lucky where I take our vehicles, they check the fluid in the rear differential every time.

We had simular exprience with monroe muffler went there for an inspection sticker and told my wife she needed all kinds of repair for her van to pass so the failed her. Of course they didnt know her husband my self am a mechanic so i took the van the next day an confronted them showed them the paper that they gave her almost everything they told her needed to be fixed was a lie except a swaybar link that was bad so they fixed that for free and inspected the van because i threatend them with the better business bureu.
