ECM question

I heard that the 85 305's incorporated a knock sensor which squeezed a little more horsepower. I have an 83 however and i was wondering if it would be possible to add the knock sensor myself? Is it a separate sensor i'd have to get and/or would i need to get an ECM from 85?

No, you would require a completely new ECM, along with a ESC module and associated wiring. The knock sensor interfaces with the ESC module, which interfaces with the ECM. I think 1984 was the first year for ESC on a GM car, could be wrong.

Personally, I'd go for a 1987 ECM from a carbed setup. There are a lot more available options for programming with the later ECMs.

I believe the ks is mounted on the intake...when timing light is set up tap on intake manifold timing should retard...
I was looking at some old info and found the spec's for the 83 caprice 305 H engine...150hp @3800rpm, 240ft lbs of torque @2400rpm...quadrajet carb.
the 305 S 175hp @4200rpm (175hp@4200rpm) 250ft lbs of torque...with this engine you would have a good amount of power...this is the fuel injected version...

Wow thanks thast the stuff i've been looking for and couldnt find it anywhere! And yeah i knew the fuel injected version is way better, oh well nothing much i can do about it. However theres this guy on youtube who has a 305- he put a sweet cam in it. It sounds real nice, i'm not sure how fast it really is cuz the guy never really shows you, maybe thats a sign but it sounds fast at least :naughty:.
I'll post the link for anyone who's curious.

P.S.- be warned for people like silicon who hate "big rims and those rubber bands they call tires." lol

Knock sensor is mounted on the passenger side of the engine block, at the location of the water jacket drain plug (the KS becomes the plug). It's at the midpoint of the block, just above the pan rail.

well I have to disagree with that location....I just checked that it is at the T stat goose neck points straight up ...a squeeze connector two wires yellow and black....sets directly in front of the air cleaner ...this is a 305 vin H engine 1983 ...

Nope, that's the coolant temperature sensor. 1983 did not have a knock sensor. Through 1983, the CTS had the squeeze-type connector. Starting in 1984, the CTS had a WP connector. So, I disagree with your disagreement!
A knock sensor will have one wire on it and that wire will be dark blue.
