shift kit

so, what's a good brand to look for when it comes to shift kits? what about pricing, etc? i have a 97 gtp.

i have the ZZP in my SE. seems to work just fine. did a top swap on my SE...so i wanted to beef up the tranny a little bit. real nice downshifts...firm upshifts, and best of all...no more 40 MPH lag :smile:

i did the medium settings on mine.

Why do you want to install a shift kit? How many miles do you have? Unless it is really needed you can cause premature wear of transmission hardware components. If you are stock the Performance Shift feature is sufficient since it does the same thing.

i have about 135k. the performance shift doesn't seem to make a huge difference. and i plan on going quite a bit more then stock, and already kinda am...

Well, don't expect the shift kit which is done at the 1-2, 2-3 accumulator make that big of a difference either. It definitely firms up the upshifts mainly 1-2 and 2-3 but nothing to improve performance such as 1/4 mile ET. BTW - I feel the difference with Performance Shift on.

With a tranny with lower mileage the shift kit may help alleviate clutch pack wear but it has its trade offs. With higher mileage you may wear out components quicker or exacerbate parts already classified as worn out.

The most compelling reason to use the shift kit is to improve shift timing monitored by the PCM module and preclude the infamous P1811 DTC and forced high line pressure which causes hard upshifts that many experience. Or a temporary work around for a flaky PCS solenoid.

i just figured for the $30 shift kit zzp has, I could install it, and it would help with my pcs solenoid like you said, which hopefully i should be getting fixed within the next few weeks. i can notice with perf shift on, just mostly on how quickly it downshifts and stuff, i can't tell a huge diff on upshifts....

another thing to keep in mind...it increases the chances for hard part failure, and the overdrive gear in these trannies are really weak already :2cents:

i already had slipping between 2-3, so i put the shift kit in. its been in for almost 30K now...and havent had any problems **knock on wood** :smile:

I recall you had another post with possible PCS issues. Technically it is best to get the PCS replaced and then do the shift kit mod. If you do not plan on replacing the PCS then the shift kit mod could be tried because it may make a difference saving you money but there are variables. However, before doing any shift kit mod the line pressure should be tested and the shift timing (< .65 seconds) checked with a GM Tech II.
