Hey Scott!

I've had the same problem pop up randomly with my 99 blazer. Underneath the glass half of the rear hatch for me is a push-button latch with a mis-leading key hole. I think that might be your problem!
Periodically I have to spray PB Blaster or WD-40 around the outside edges of the button to keep it from sticking in the unlatched position. I also spray the actual latching mechanism inside. Otherwise it won't open when I want it to and opens when I don't want it to.

Hope that helps!

Melissa
