replacing fuel pump in 95 k1500

if i was to replace the fuel pump in my truck, would it be easier to drop the tank or take off the bed of the truck? im having some intermittent hesitation problems and my truck likes to die at red lights during these intermittent problems since its in neutral so the tranny cant force the motor to keep turning. also, about how much is a pump/sending unit at autozone or somewhere like that?

Before going into it and spending money, make sure you know for sure it is the problem. Trust me, I've jumped into repairs too fast a lot of the time and end up spending time and money that wasn't necessary! It depends on how rusty the bolts that hold the bed in. A friend of mine was going to remove the bed but instead just dropped the tank because the bolts were to rusty on the bed. Also it depends on how much gas is still in the tank. Once bed is removed you also need to re-align it. A fuel PUMP from AutoZone runs $50-$80, and and the entire sending unit about $250. Approximate numbers. I would advise against aftermarket fuel pumps. I know it pricey to go OEM but on a fuel pump you are just better off to do so. Look at RockAuto.com for prices on AC-Delco or Delphi pump / sending units. They usually have the best prices for OEM type stuff, unless you have an AC-Delco warehouse somewhere near you.
