rear main seal question

Question: If I had a rear-main seal leak on my 97 4x4 Jimmy, would I see oil and gunk on the flywheel when I look through the transmission/flywheel access hole?
Is is possible to have a rear-main leak and also a squeaky clean flywheel when viewed through the access hole?

They may leak inside or run down back of oil pand or front of cover.
Removing cover helps spot the leak.
But als check back of engine good and check the oil filter and base gasket area and oil cooler line if it has any.
Or if a oil pressure sensding unit on rear of engine or lower side by oil filter have a good look at them to.
Also they nmake a keak dye kit to put in the engine oil for the hard to find leaks

I've run some UV dye through.
At first I suspected the distributor. It appears to be okay though.
I see the brightest "green-dye" spots on the front seal (although it is not "wet" with oil) -- and then I notice lotsa bright green on the bottom of the oil pan, the bottom of the bellhousing, and the starter. I don't see much dye up above the starter, which is weird. If it were a valve cover, pressure sensor, or distributor, I'd expect to see the dye dripping down above the starter.
When I look through the tranny/flywheel inspection hole, I do see traces of green dye which I didn't see before.
I'm on my second AutoRX Seal Leak Application is the past few months ...
On a 4x4, would I need to pull the engine to replace the rear main seal? or pull tranny, crossbar, and transfer case? phew!

Clean off all old dye and oil and see if you can find out for sure where it is leaking from.
Check the oil filter base gasket real close.
Rear main seal the engine or transmission has to be pulled.
