This is my friends car . The water pump seems to be pissing out at a high rate.
Question -how hard is it to do this job. ?
Is this an external pump or one of those inside with the timing belt.?
I have no book on it but I'm a good mechanic. Any and all help would be appreciated . The car is really needed by this person and they don't have much funds.
LINKS to anything ??
Thanks in advance.------Crys

Hey man, its nice of you to fix your friends car. What motor is in it? 3.1mpfi?
if its the 3.1...
-loosen the 4 bolts on the waterpump pulley
-remove the serpentine belt
-remove the wp pulley
-remove the 5 (or 6) bolts holding the water pump on
-tap it gently with a plastic hammer to tap it loose
-scrape off the old w/p gasket
-install new gasket on new waterpump with some silicone
-tighten bolts down in a star pattern
-reinstall wp pulley and serpentine belt
-refill coolant and bleed air out
should only be an hour long job.
If your car has the 3.4DOHC, I'm sure the waterpump r&r is much more involved.

The GM 3.1/3.4's are the easiest water pump there is. Like tblake stated, it's 9 total bolts (4 for the pulley and 5 for the pump itself). Getting the old gasket cleaned off takes longer than actually R&R'ing the pump. Bleeding the air out of the cooling system can be a PITA though. Do a forum search on bleeding/refilling the coolant to be sure you do it correctly.

When I did my water pump which was about 2 years ago on a GP 3.8. It was a real pia had to loosen the power steering pump. When I was all done and ready to get the air out of the cooling system. I did not know about the bleeder valve on the thermostat housing. What I did was to start the car and let it run for a little bit shut it off and put more antifreeze in the radiator.
