Let's just say I've owned my '97 4x2 Rodeo for 12yrs now, it's been to more 4x4 trails then my previous 4x4 Rodeo had been; I live in 4x4 country where it's darn near impossible to get out during a winter storm w/o 4-wheel drive.

Last year, however, there were 2 trucks on the road pulling out other cars/trucks, my 4x4 Tacoma and my 4x2 Rodeo.

I'm a die-hard 4x4 believer, having always owned a camper, boat, and visited places where 4x4 was a darn near requirement, however, this is the first 4x2 truck that we actually trust MORE then 90% of the 4x4's available on the road.

FWIW, my 4x4 Tacoma slides around more then the Rodeo.

Key of the wise, a set of EXCELLENT A/T tires, knowing how to drive, and not being too heavy on the throttle.

This truck has seen more then 2' of snow, truly soft beach sand, icy mountain slopes, red Oklahoma clay-mud, we've never gotten stuck, nor have we had to be towed.

I enjoy it so much off-road, we put a 2" lift and bigger tires, not that it needed it, just gave it some spice

I'm kidding! I live in FL and any offroad driving here is pretty tame. I jumped at the opportunity to get "offroad" in my sister's backyard on a trip to CT and had her snap some pictures. The 4X2 version is pretty capable.

I have a 96 rodeo 2wd and I have only goten stuck one time and it was my own fault, i bottomed out in a mud hole and I could put my truck in drive and the tire would just spin and spin. Other than that I have taken the truck out many time and had no problem going places that the big trucks go. It's all stock, regular tires 235/70r or 75r . It's the first truck I have owned and love it.. I would say take it out and have FUN.. but in my case make sure u knw or take someone with 4wd with u....lmao just in case.

Ramblin is right! The most important factor in the "2WD Vs. 4WD" debate is the driver and his/her skills! I ran the Rocky Mount Loop at URE in my 1st gen Trooper in 2WD once just to say I did it!
