reliability between Auto & manual eurovan trans

I hear a lot about automatic transmissions breaking once around the 100k miles. What about the 5 speed manual transmissions used on the 93 and maybe 95 eurovans? Are these a lot more reliable? would a 5 speed manual transmission bolt up to the VR6 or just the 2.5 5cyl?
