I need to locate a replacement part for a 1999 Ford Escort 2.0 SPI engine. I know the part is bad. I can jump around the CCRM to get the AC to work. AC works fine, but does not cut off until the AC is turned off. The ford dealer wants close to $300 dollars. I'm located close to DFW in Texas.

I'ld think a bone yard in your area..or one shipped to you. Try www.car-part.com. They might not list that specific part..but it doesn't (to me) sound like it would be hard to get or expensive. Most small modules like that are like $10/$20. You may have to go pull one. Get the #'s.take the old one with you.

The CCRM is expensive. Get one at the boneyard. Like said before take the old one with you or write down the part number. The relay for the AC compressor inside usually has a solder link that has broken. If you are good with your hands you could take it apart and resolder the connection. It 's been done successfully on this forum.

Ive called around. Its hard to find the exact year. Does anyone know if any prior or newer escort models use the same CCRM? It controls more that just the AC compressor so I'm hesitant to get just any year.

1997 to 2001 Escorts all have the CCRM. It controls the fuel pump relay, the Power control module relay, the cooling fan relay and the A/C relay. If you call around tell them you are looking for a CCRM for a 97-01 2.0 SOHC SPI engine. Take your CCRM to the boneyard and compare part numbers. 97 to 2001 Escorts are all third generation and share parts, but I don't know if the CCRM from another 3rd gen. will fit your car.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any definitive guide to CCRM compatibility. I do know though from reading wiring diagrams that there are at least two different types. One type requires that pin 22 be driven low (i.e. to 0V) to engage the A/C clutch, whilst the other type requires that pin 22 be driven high (i.e. to 12V) to engage the clutch, so straight away those two are incompatible with each other, and I've seen both configurations in use on wiring diagrams for post-'97 escorts (the CCRM wasn't used on earlier models).
There used to be an article on a professional A/C website which reckoned there are in fact three different types, and it quoted the three part numbers, but I'm not aware of what the third difference is. The website no longer exists but it's still available, minus the photos, via the Internet Archive service, here (http://web.archive.org/web/20080119192554/http://proacshops.com/artman/publish/article_18.shtml).
And then if you take a look here (http://www.feoa.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=40417&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0), in the first post, the thread starter reckons it's the last two letters which determine compatibility, but I don't know how accurate that information might be.
Plenty of folks have had success in doing that relay fix by the way, so as Dave said, if you're handy with a soldering iron or know somebody who is then that might be the easiest and cheapest option.
Also be aware that mis-diagnosis can occur with that CCRM - there are two people on the ZX2 forum who've purchased and fitted expensive replacement CCRMs recently, only to find that their A/C still doesn't work so they're no further forward.

What's a CCRM?It's the Constant Control Relay Module, a small unit which contains a printed circuit board on which are mounted the relays which Dave listed. It was used on the North American Escorts from '97 onwards and it was a dumb step, to take such crucial relays and hide them away inside an expensive module where they can't be quickly, easily, and cheaply replaced individually if one suspects that one of them has failed, and the module's internal A/C relay, responsible for engaging/disengaging the A/C clutch is indeed failure-prone.

There are many CCRM's for 3rd generation Escorts and they are not compatible. I ordered 2 online that supposedly were compatible with my '99 and both (different part numbers) failed to operate the fuel pump. I also bought 2 from boneyards that had the same bad solder issue.
I finally bought one that works on ebay, here is a link to the supplier, I checked and he has one for sale online. price is $151 which is what i paid .
Here is the link to fordpartsguys on ebay and the part: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Constant-Control-Relay-Module-1998-2005-Ford-Escort_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33596QQihZ014QQi temZ330245948811QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Thanks brianjg and Selectron. Isn't it the truth about Ford making 1 expensive relay module instead of 4 inexpensive relays. It's not hard to see the reasoning for this. MONEY! If any of the 4 relays goes out on the CCRM then Ford can get into your back pocket for the other 3 at the same time.
The cost of making this unit couldn't be more than $10-$20. I read some place that if a car was built piece by piece from the parts dealer it would cost in the neighborhood of $150,000. To add insult to injury they probably have it contracted out to some company in China.

I doubt that Ford actually makes the module.
And I don't have one of these, but would it be possible to open the module and replace the relay?

The CCRM is located under the air cleaner on the drivers side of the car. It is not hard to get to just takes a little time. I doubt this is the issue with your battery. How old is the battery? I could be that it is due for replacement. If it is a new one then I would check around to see if anything stays on when the car is off like the glove box light trunk light or etc.

The CCRM would not affect charging system. I recently had a situation with a 99 escort where a fully charged battery was draining after even short drives (with no accessories or lights on). The alternator was faulty (it was the original) - draining rather than charging the battery. Standard alternator test didn't detect the problem so after 2 new batteries a trip to a mechanic with good knowledge of electrical problems the problem was found. I replaced the alternator at a cost of about $150 and all was good.

I was driving down the highway when the gauges & electrical went dead the car continued to run until battery was drained had alternator tested & was told it's fine. I had that chattering so I was wondering if the ccrm could be the electrical problem I'm looking for?

As I said, I also had my alternator tested and was told it was fine. The charging warning light never came on but for some reason the alternator was draining rather than charging the battery. Where was your alternator tested - a typical autozone test may not find a problem (mine didn't I dont know why) Is it the original? How old is the battery? Has it been tested?
I'd be amazed if it wasn't the alternator.

That's what I figured it is the original alternator & why else would the battery continue to be drained while car is running unless alternator is not charging. Thanks for the info I was getting really frustrated. I really do appreciate the help from you!!!!!!

I'd get the alternator tested someplace else. Having said that you really need a voltmater installed in your car. If you don't want to do that, use one that plugs into the lighter outlet, like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Equus-3721-Battery-Charging-Monitor/dp/B000EVWDU0/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1311598514&sr=8-6
Equus 3721 Battery and Charging System Monitor

Some WalMarts have these as well (more expensive than Amazon).
