My 99 (3800) will fire up and immediately die. No SES light, but dash lights are inconsistent from one try to the next. Is this an ignition switch issue?

Could be. Do the lights on the dash light up erratically too?

It's either an ignition switch or fuel pressure regulator issue.

Pay very close attention to the instrument cluster lights when the key is in the "on" position just before turning over the engine. You should notice that some lights will come on during a successful start. Unfortunately, I can't remember which ones. After a couple of tries, you'll understand what I mean.

If you notice this pattern, it is likely an erratic ignition switch that will only get worst with time.

On my father in laws 99 Intrigue, the ignition switch caused the lights on the dash to go all wonkey and flash on and off. Depending on how much pressure you put on the key when turning it they wouldn't flash, but if you pulled on the key when turning it, the lights would definately flash, indicating the switch was bad.

Last night when I first reported this, the car would not start - not once in ten tries. I charged the battery, which was not alot and made sure the connections were good, even though they seemed ok. Got it to fire up and now I'm into the LIM gasket. Seems like the lights were different from time to time when trying to start it - so I'm guessing ignition switch.

I would give the switch a try. I got one from the wrecking yard out of a 2004 Grand Prix for my father in laws car and it has been working great since I replaced it last spring. I did try to repair the old one, but that only lasted for a month or so.

I replaced the ignition switch and still had problems - but the symptom seemed to change a little. I could keep it running by opening the throttle constantly, but boy there was alot of unspent fuel coming out the exhaust.

Checked for codes and nothing there. Using the scanner, I noticed the MAF sensor input was jumping all over the place. Compared that with the readings on a good running car and decided to replace it. Got the MAF sensor installed tonight and she runs great! Thanks for the help.
