Oil pressure switch

I have a 94 firebird 3.4L with 100,xxx miles. Just recently my cat broke and created an exhaust leak. Since that happened my oil pressure would shoot over 80 psi when I took my foot off the gas. When idling the car is fine and holds about 20psi then when Im at 2000rpm its at 60psi but when I take my foot off the gas it shoots to over 80 for between 2-30 seconds. I thought this might be because of some kind of back pressure from the hole in the exhaust so I replaced my cat and still has the same problem. I dont think I have a faulty guage because the car smells like burning oil and has oil all over the bottom of the engine which wasn't there before.

So do you think I might just have a bad oil pressure switch?

first find where you're losing the oil at. could be coming out of where the pressure switch screws in.

The problem isn't where the oil is coming from.... The oil didn't start to leak until about a week after the high pressure situation. I believe its only leaking because the engine is running over 80 psi with nowhere for the oil to go.

drop the pan and change the pump then.

Would loosing oil cause my pressure to shoot through the roof?

Its right above the oil filter. You'll have to jack the car up on the driver's side. You'll also need a special deep socket to remove it too. Later models have it located behind the intake manifold on the driver's side.
