Bare with me, I am still learning myself.

Is it an automatic or a stick shift?

When you say it is leaking, what is leaking?

If you can answer these it might help the guys/gals here that know what they are talking about give you a direction to go in.

for your description im guessing that is an automatic if thats so, I've been there sorry to tell you but it has happened to me twice this year you problaly have a few worn cluches take it to somebody who repairs transmisions and get it rebuild

If the leak is "profuse", you may simply be low on fluid.

I agree with gorgpr, it may be "fried". Does it act funny in reverse?

First, check the fluid level. if it is low don't attempt to drive the car. Fill it up and see if the problem goes away. If it does, get the leak fixed at a trans shop (unless it is an easy fix)
If you are a girl and don't know a lot about cars my advice to you would be to have a guy who does know about cars go with you when you take it to be fixed/looked at. It may be sexist but it will probably save you from some unneeded repairs and over billing.

Make an appointment with a reputiable transmission shop to have it looked at. Take your friend with you and have him ask questions once they tell you what is wrong. If you decide to let them do the repairs, take your friend back with you when you pick the car up.
