Ground

Hi

I got a 96 escort lx. All my speakers seem to be crackling and the sound seem to be switching over to the right side at random times. I tested out and installed new speakers also. Could it be a ground problem from the reciever. The only ground i see is within the power connector going into the receiver.

Yes, it is probably a ground problem. Try running a ground wire between the case of the receiver and the car. The reason I'm saying this is that I put in an aftermarket receiver and had it all together. The speakers made a crackling sound and and not much volume. I grounded the frame of the receiver to the ground of the car (frame). Everything cleared right up. If you don't have a receiver with a metal frame, run a ground directly to the battery.

How large should the groud wire be?

18 or 20 gauge or whatever gauge the power line to the radio is. You should be able to find an already existing wire to ground screw under/inside the dash that you can use or create your own on any of the major metal inside the dash.
