I have seen a lot of people talking about their painting problems and the FAQ really doesn't go into the details of the different paints and the effects they have on each other. So here is my 411 from my experences. You mileage may vary.....
:frog:

Water based paint-- also known as acrylic paint. Water based paint can be washed out of a paint brush with warm water. These are good paints to do some large areas with an airbrush only. They work well with oil based paint in either over the oil or oil over water. . Make sure both are completely dry before painting over. I don't recomend putting acrylic base over lacquer. I have done it with limited sucsess. Tamaya makes a great water based clear paints that work great for turn singals, lights, and for an overall top coat over a different base for a translucent effect.

Oil based paint-- also know as Enamel paint. Oil based paint needs to be washed out of brushs with an enamel based thinner. These are great for all sorts of paint jobs as they will work for small details as well as large surfaces using either an airbrush or paint brushes. I really don't recomend painting a large surface with a brush in oil, even though it might look good you will still be able to see the brush strokes. They will go over acrylic paint as well as lacquer paint. They will polish up fine with no problems. DO not put a lacquer gloss coat on top of a oil based paint job-it will crack or worse. A normal oil based top coat will work great with the oil based paint. Other top coats can be used-try different top coats that work for you.

Automotive Paint-- also know as lacquer paint. Lacquer based paint needs to be thinned with lacquer thinner only. Lacquer paint is used in airbrushes only or in spray can form as in Tamaya spray cans. Most lacquer paints need to thinned 1:1 for a good airbrush coat. Lacquer paints are used for painting large surfaces such as a car body and can be used for smaller projects such as engines. Lacquer paint will NOT go over any paint. Water and oil based paint however WILL go over lacquer paint. A lacquer based gloss coat will work best over a lacquer top coat. I have expermented with other top coats and found that oil based as well as glaze top coats will work too.

If you have anymore to add to this please do!!

Lacquer paint can be sub divided into two kinds.
Professional use lacquer, such as automotive paint melts plastic.
Synthetic (or hobby use) lacquer based acrylic paints, such as Tamiya, Mr. Hobby (Gunze), Modeler's, Finisher's don't.
Mr. Color has been available for several decades, and it's synthetic lacquer based acrylic, just like Tamiya Spray. It can be used for either airbrush or hand brush. Mr. Retarder and leveling thinner is recommended.

Urethane paint is another kind, which is becoming more popular among pros these days, especially clear coat. It's two part paint, and a kit usually comes with a bottle of urethane thinner. Once, paint is mixed with hardener, it can't be stored. Since, it hardens by chemical reaction, you don't have to worry if the paint is thoroughly dry or not, and it's ready to sand and polish in 4 - 7 days.
The paint is very hard, but when sanded and polished properly, it creates better sheen than most of the lacquer clear.
Rainbow Ten carries Urethane Clear GP1 by Hobby Shop GT.
