95 Talon 2.0 non turbo automatic.
I had just bought this talon today and was driving it home and 25 min. into going home the trans just stop working. I was going 60mph and had cruise on then all the sudden it just went into neutral. I hit the brake to disengage cruise and hit the gas but still nothing. So I pulled over and attempted to switch gears and the only ones that would work was park neutral and reverse. The person I bought it from had changed the trany with one from the junk yard. The guy said he had been driving it around for a couple weeks with no problem. This is my first import I have ever owned so I know nothing about it. I have read about the TCU and how to check it but I cant find it. I looked behind the stereo but nothing there. Can anybody help with an idea of what could cause my problem or maybe tell me where the TCU is in a 95. Thanks :headshake

Not sure with automatics so I can't help too much. But the TCU on n/t are generally in the engine bay. Look on the drivers side right in front of the battery. There should be 2 rectangular boxes. One is the ECU, the other is the TCU.

Welcome to AF!
That sucks that your car broke right after you bought it. Hopefully you can get it fixed pretty cheap. The TCU is right beside the ECU like Dave said.

My 92 plymouth colt vista done the same thing. I ended up having to drive it 40 miles home in reverse. Its hard to pinpoint a problem like that, automatics transmissions are so tricky. Sounds pretty bad to me though. Hopefully its not though.

Thanks for all the reply's. I did see the 2 boxes under the hood and did take them out but I never opened them up because I was unsure what they were. Another thing I wanted to add or ask is that when I'm going 60mph my rpm is at 3500 and at 65 it is at 4 grand. It's been a few years since I owned a 4cyl but is that normal for this car. Another thing is that it's suppose to have overdrive, well when I push the button nothing happens and the light on the dash does not light up either. Thanks again for all your guys help.

Well I took it for a test drive and about ten min. into it, it decided to slip but it went right back in gear then about ten min. later it slipped out again for about 2 min. then stayed in gear all the way home which was ten min. drive. So I'm willing to bet it's the transmission. Does anybody agree?

I don't know much about transmissions, but unfortunately like you I'm learning the hard way, the way I understand it the O/D has an electric relay to the lockup solenoid, on my tranny(604) you can see a plug going into the front of the transmission where the lockup solenoid is located. from the button on your shifter to this solenoid can be the problem, or it may be the solenoid itself. a transmission shop has a tester that can tell where the problem is (so they claim). But this only addresses your O/D problem , and not very well, but I am trying.:2cents: Also according to the transmission shops I've contacted when the lockup malfuntions the transmission stays in one gear 2nd (I believe) which will cause high rpm's 4K rpm at 65mph indicates, in my limited experience, that you are either not in high gear or your not in O/D. Does a check engine light ever come on? Also none of this addresses slipping which is something I can't help you with at all. Check the transmission fluid, is it full? Does it smell or look burnt on have noticable metal shavings on the dipstick? An automatic has clutches that can slip due to various problems.

Well I removed the tranny today. The place where the transmission came from in the first place is going to give me a different one. Great!. So now when I get it installed on tuesday we will find out if it was the trans or a faulty computer. I'll let you all know. Thanks for all the ideas.

Well I got the transmission installed and well, it works, so far it hasn't sliped outa gear. Thats a plus. But something doesn't feel right. Once again when I turn the overdrive switch off or on nothing happend. I counted the gears as it shift and counted all 4 but when it when into 4th it kinda felt like it sliped back out. How many gears are in these tranys. I thought it was 4. Also I'm running about 3000rpm at 55 is that normal. To refresh the motor is a 95 2.0 non turbo . Thanks:confused:

Mother F*@# just when everything was going great it sliped outa gear then went into 2nd and its stayin in 2nd. From what I've read from other forums this is called a fault mode or whatever name people give it. What the heck causes this to happen. Does it mean my computer is bad. If it's not one thing it's another. Damn...

That's the fun of owning a DSM. Again, I've never worked with autos before on these cars but if the tranny got rebuilt or whatever, I would say try a new TCU then.

Just a thought, why not have the transmision place that replaced the transmission check it out, it could be a fault between the O/D button and the solinoid in the tranny. They have a very precise tester that can tell them exactly were the problem lies.

Well guys. It's runnin good now. Come to find out it was a combination of the tranny and the TCU. I went to the junk yard and got a couple TCU's (just to make sure) and to my surprise BINGO! Now the talon moves great. I hope this forum will help others thru their journey of the great transmissions. Pshh:banghead:
