Odd problem - no chimes, no radio

Hi all,

I have a 2000 Sunfire SE. Standard radio - non Bose, non OnStar. A while ago, my radio went - or so I thought. I had some popping from the passenger front speaker. Then, nothing. I have also in this lost the chimes (keys in ignition, lights left on etc.) chimes.

I assumed this was related to the deck, so I went out and purchased an aftermarket deck, with a chime bypass. when I wired everything up, the chime bypass worked - got the chimes from the new box. but, I still have no output from the radio - I have attempted to use both a CD and the radio, and still no output. I plugged the factory deck back in to test, and again no output altogether. I'm at a loss, and have no idea what the problem could be. Any ideas?

No ouputs at all huh? How bout INputs? What kind of voltage is showin' on the power feed INto the deck there?

Power is fine - the radio works, except that you can't hear anything. I have systematically disconnected speakers to break connections, and still nothing. I can not for the life of me figure this out...

I'm kinda' missing somethin' here too...

When you plugged back in the original radio, had you done something that you EXPECTED it to play, or was it just 'plug n pray', see if it went away?

It was plug and pray. In the end, nothing changed. So I'll take the aftermarket and various pieces back, in the end I don't need it - but I'd love to know what is going on with the wiring....

you may have the problem that your speakers are blown. the chimes come through the speakers. replace your speakers and that should fix your problem

Check voltage into the speakers, as well as the visible wired that lead to the cone and tweeter (make sure the radio is on). Im not sure what the exact voltages should be, but you should be getting sound if its above 0V.

I'd bet one or more wires are broken where they hinge with the door... the standard radio doesn't have the power output to blow the speakers (unless my previous owner replaced the speakers and not the radio :dunno:)

Did you try hooking a speaker directly to the radio?
