Timing marks on balancer.

I have just replaced the intake gaskets on my son's 2000 Blazer 4.3L and thought I had marked the distributor properly before removing it. Well on re-istallation I could not get the marks so to line up so I am now trying to install it as if it was new. While looking through the posts here I came across this statement:

"I have two grooves on the balancer at about 12 and 3 o'clock, separated by a paint mark between the two grooves at about 1 o'clock. Should I line the paint mark up with the "0"? The 3 o'clock groove? The 12 o'clock groove?"

No one seemed to give a definitive answer other than do not use the paint mark. Is 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock read facing the vehicle from the front?

I did not know there were 2 marks and have spent the day trying to line up the 1 mark that I saw.

Help me please?

Welcome there JOhn.

Did you turn the motor after pullin' the distributor?

If so, do you know how to do static timing?

If not, you have to turn the distributor ahead (or back) so that when the gears hit the drive, they turn back to your marks.

Which scenario is you???

You will need to find TDC compression stroke and roll the piston to TDC there.
Remove no one plug and crank engine and feel for compression stroke.
The crank engine by hand and.
The get the piston on TDC.

Then set dist as in picture.

The timing is not adjustable but the dist has to be set right and Camshaft retard checked and set with a scanner after it starts and runs.

Another way to find TDC compression stroke is when the opposite firing cylinder valves are rocking.
One opening and one losing.
Good luck

The question I have is which timing mark on the balancer is the one that indicates TDC. There are 2 marks one at 12 oclock and 1 at 3 oclock. However do I look at the clock from the front of the vehicle looking back.

The one that lines up when engine is on TDC compresion stroke.

But the timing marks are like the tits on a boar hog.
The do not do much good.
The timing is not adjustable.
Set the engine on TDC compression stroke and set dist rotor as in picture.

I found the answer on another forum. It is the 12 oclock mark looking at the front of the vehicle. I rotated the engine to this mark, slipped the distributor into place bolted it down and the engine fired right up at the first turn of the key.

You are only haft way home.

Nothing. Your site is the only place I heard it mentioned. And when I do a search on this site, you are the one who talks most about it. So please tell me what it is and why do I need it.

A good service manual will led you threw it.
But it requires a good engine capable scanner to do it.
Without a scanner you can not set or check it.
Good luck

I am trying to get a straight answer.
What have I done that requires checking.
What can I have done wrong that requires checking.
Since nothing is adjustable by mere mortals then what out of adjustment can I have done.
My understanding is that if I change some piece of equipment to non stock then the on board computer needs some info which a scanner can supply. Other than that if the vehicle is stock then nothing has changed.

Right? Wrong?

It is not a case of what you have done wrong.
It is a case of what needs to be done.
After engine is running you need to set the camshaft retart setting as close to 0 degrees - or + degrees as you can get it.
The timing is not adjustable but the camshaft retard is.
And as said the timing pointer marks are like the tits on a boar hog.
Not much help.
Camshaft retard sets the dist rotor to center on the plug wire terminal in dist cap.
To check or set it you need a engine capable scanner.
Do you have one?
If not you need to find a good repair shop that does and have them set it.

The procedure to set it is outlined in the good repair manuals like a factory manual or a good All Data on line sub.
