Air Silencer Removal?

My girlfriend just purchased a '99 Civic Ex (manual). I'm wondering about the basics (air silencer removal, different gauges). I have a '98 Mustang GT (no flames!!) and the air silencer is the first thing I took out. Is this common place for a Honda and should I expect an increase in hp and mpg with the Honda? Also, she wants gauges that glow purple, so any suggestions/pics would be greatly appreciated!! -Thanks.

what the fuck is an "air silencer" :alien2: do you mean intake?
and indiglo gauges that change 6 or 8 colors is what you want to have the purple color.

The snorkel that feeds into the bottom of the air filter box is generally referred to as an air intake silencer. Maybe I gave you guys too much credit. The only response in 24 hrs is by some guy that apparently knows nothing and immediately resorts to cussing? Oh well, thanks anyway. I can see this forum is completely useless.:flipa:

don't worry about that guy. Taking off the intake resonator isn't going to give her any power gains, it'll make the intake sound a little meaner, but that's it.

i was'nt tring to be a dick as you would say. i just did'nt knoe what an air silencer was. i also helped you out with the gauges.

Yeah, the intake wont make an HP gain, but I noticed a little better throttle response from it. 'Course, it could be psychosematic, but my car will start to move faster, faster, when I stomp the pedal now.

On the mustang, removing the silencer is supposedly good for about 2-3 hp. I think I'll just leave it in place if there is no real gain from removing it. The intake from the silencer to the throttle body seems very restrictive, so what kind of gains are you guys seeing from CAI kits. Thanks for you help (and for redeeming this site)!!

Just go for it. It probably won't do much... but it won't hurt either. It's a little tough because Honda made a big freakin' spaghetti mess out of the resonator pipings. You will have to remove the front bumper cover to get access to the piping. It will go from your air filter box, all the way down into the passenger side corner of the bumper. The piping branches off into places and it will get really irritating... but if you mess around w/ it, eventually you should get it out.
Just make sure you get rid of the resonator piping... and not the actual filter box. You sound competent, so this should be a given. I'm only saying it because you'd be surprised... some people don't know much. ;)

WOW. I can't believe it is that complicated. On the Stang, removing the air silencer is about a 2 minute process. Sorry to keep referring to Mustangs, but that is where my experience lies. Thanks for the help though.

anything done on an american car takes 2x as long on our cars. nissan acutally put the oil filter undernath the plastic shield for the drive belts on my car. i have to bend it about 1/2" away from snapping just to get it off. which leads to the likelyhood of spilling oil on your belts which is a big no-no. and good luck turning a wrench in the crammed-ass engine bay or while tinkering with the exhaust. i refer to my car as mr. knucklebuster once maintenance time rolls around
