1995 z-71 4x4 problem

Hi all I'm new to the site and I have a problem I just got a 95 -z71 I put it in 4-wheel drive the lights in the shifter doesn't come on I looked and the frt. shaft turns when you move and there is no noise as of anything broke...I cked the shift actuator and it feels hot so I removed the one from my other truck and it does the same thing... and the wires have power but the front. wheels will not engage....any ideas ......all the fuses are good what else can be wrong...think you ...in the meantime I will be :banghead:

Follow the wire that feeds power to the shifter light. My $$$ says that's THE problem.

Is that one of the sensors on top of the transfer case....

Pull the shifter control where the little light ain't workin', and follow the wire that feeds power to the shifter light (with a multimeter).
Yes, it might go to the solenoid on top of the transfer case and you might be able to test there for power, but you'll have to get a wiring diagram, and see if the same wire that light up the shifter light, comes from the transfer case.
I say do the sure thing tho', and follow the wire that feeds power to the shifter light.

now, take it easy and don't chase problems that are not there.
1. both halfshafts should rotate along with wheels rotation
2. intermediate driveshaft will rotate as vehicle moves. should not be binding with wheels off the ground, and turned by hand with some resistance. should not be able to rotate it by hand with wheels down and in parking.
3. if you drove the car for some time, actuator WILL feel warm, it's right next to a lot of heat producing parts. did you touch transfer case? bet ya it was same temp as actuator.
4. knowing them switches - you got bad switch. do you have ANY lights lit on it? say, you were in 2HI, was the little light next to it lit? then you have power to the switch. those are notorius to fail, and fast.

Good idea! Very true!
And ones that are there, right in front of you, like an indicator light that ain't workin', is the first thing to test. Plain as day, easy to follow, best thing to do, etc., ...
