This thing is as ugly as the Aztec

I am amazed that there isn't the same backlash going on with the Avalanche as there is with the Aztec. This truck is so unappealing to look at, I wonder what everybody at Chevy was drinking when they gave the go ahead to produce the Avalanche.
The truck has zero aerodynamics, it's like a brick wall coming down the road. The front facia makes me want to vomit. What's up with all the plastic cladding? And those wheel wells, ugh! You do NOT cut a wheel well straight like that, EVER. It looks like they tried to achieve some kind of Cadillac skirt look. I could go on..really, I could. This truck is hideous.
Magazines seem to rave about the damn thing. Where they bad mouth the Aztec, they don't on the Avalanche, it's like they were paid off by Chevy. They just sit and rave about all of the little features that will make your life easier. Like that back glass and section that opens up to "transform it from a pick-up to an SUV." I can tell already how old that would get switching it back and forth. It is not a feature that many would use. I don't care if this truck gave me great fellatio, I would not be caught dead in it.
Oh well, that's enough ranting.

ehhhh, its not quite up to par with the ugliness that oozes from every crack in the aztec's molded plastic:apuke: I really dont think it looks THAT bad... It looks like more like an older car on steroids than a pickup or an SUV.

Hey ThaDRD, welcome to AF!!! :D
I agree with pretty much everything you said. :apuke: As for why the Avalanche is not experiencing the backlash the Aztek did (does), I just think we've focused and spent all out all our ire on the Aztek, and the Avalanche seems like a copy-ugly-cat. GM's really pushing for the Most Hideous Awards nowadays. :( http://www.duhspot.com/users/smiley/s/otn/confused/ne_nau.gif

I don't think they look that bad. I've seen everal pics of lifted ones that really look good. Some other mods I've seen done to them that look good are painting the plastic cladding to match the paint, but takes some work to get it to look right, and Line-X (spray in bedliner) sprayed on the cladding.

Aztek, PT Cruiser, Avalanche = Pinto, Gremlin, Mustang II.
Geeez... Just because 70's clothes came back doesn't mean we want the dud cars too!
Although the Aztek, PT Cruiser, and Avalanche look good when heavily modded, that is no excuse for poor design. That is like saying your girlfriend would look good after lots of plastic surgery (hardly a compliment).

I think this has an excellent design. The Avalanche is a sharp looking truckmodded or not. I really like the pick-up to an SUV feature. I dont think this truck is ugly at all.

Not all the time. Not many of those flip that easily. If they did flip so easy they would be outlawed and I doubt the owner would raise it that high if there were hazards like that.

hey now my dad just bought one of those, and he doesn't like the way they look either, but the utilitarian part of it is out of this world. back in the 60's you didn't buy a truck because of how it looked but because of how it performed, and this thing rides smooth yet responsive. we've used it more than enough times in the past 2 months to convince us this thing was worth the money.

I agree. I cant stand the avalance, I think it looks like they were trying
to make it look like a space ship, from that old show, battlestar galactica.
One thing I would like to know is, what are you supose to do if you need to haul plywood in the middle of the winter.
There is not going to be a rear window in the back.
I have attempted to email G.M. about this but they quit answering my
emails, when I changed my address to aztecsugly.
I personally take offense to the Idea that GM thinks the general car buying public is mindless enough to ignore the fact that the vehicle
is ugly and buy the vehicle just because it has neet little gizmos and doodads golted all over it.
I do think they would sell a whole lot more of them in the hood, if they
would offer them with gold spoke wheels, and an oversize sun viser.
Those are the only things they are missing.

Wow. What is with every one dissing the Avalanche. I think it is a very nice vehicle and it is an insult to compare it too it's ugly brother Aztec, let alone call it uglier. The Avalanche was a revolution in SUV design when it came out. If you think that it is ugly, then you also think the Cadillaac Escalade EXT is ugly. They are the same vehicle, and both are nice SUVs.

I don't think the cadilac is nearly as bad as the avalanche.
wile it is basicly the same vehicle it doesn't have all of the ugly attributes
of the ave.
the headlights don't have the squint look, the front bumper doesn't have the same bulk.
The fenders aren't as bulbus, or squared off above the tires.
the plastic below the belt line are much cleaner looking on the cad, as well as painted to match.
the rear end isn't much better from one to the other.
I hate the racer back thing behind the cab but I'm told that is structural.
This in my mind, says that there must be a strength issue there.
If I were set on buying one it would be the caddy
However the caddy is some $50k more. However I still dont care for the

The Cadillac is a much nicer vehicle, but I don't see how you can hate one and love the other. If you like that style SUV and you are looking to save about $20k, get the Avalanche. However, I am not a huge fan of the SUV/Pickup crap that GM is trying to pull off.

I don't think I said that I like he caddy, I was just saying the caddy is not as bad.
If you put them side by side, you would see how much difference there realy is.
To me the simple fact that the caddy has smother cleaner lines make all the difference in the world.
Just to be clear, I'm NOT about to be seen in either one of these.

Everyone criticizes Chevy's plastic moldings. They made plastic an option on the 2003 Avalanche, and it looked rather naked without it. I like it just the way it is, a very badass looking SUV.
Scott 02
01-20-2003, 11:10 PM
I like what SuPeRcAr_MaN said. Its a bad ass looking SUV and with the 502 V8 is is one bad ass machine. The plastic gives in some style.
aztecsugly
01-21-2003, 01:57 AM
Well, then I guess I'm Old school, where a bad ass suv was an old landcruiser built out fo 18 guage sheet metal.
The only plastic was the steering wheel and the heater controle.
With the tuned port V-8 and 700r4 I'll bet I could do a whole lot more off road than the Ave. I would also leave fewer plastic parts on the trail.
When did the plastic become an option? From what I have seen it seems
to be an integral part of the body. Ive never seen one without it.

I just checked the chevy web site, they are going to offer for 03, a
stripped down, plasticless, ave as an option.
I still don't like it, but it looks a whole lot better.
I predict that they will start selling more plasticless aves than the
"Plastic recycle bin" version.
They must have realised that many people were put out by the look.
I saw one yesterday, that had been sideswiped, and had several pieces
missing.
What I saw, tells me, that it took some effort, to offer a plasticless version.
the front fenders are probably the same as the pickup but most of the outer sheatmetal is different for the steal version.

I have always thought that the avalanche was loosely based on a sifi
spaceship. I finally found what I was thinking of.
The space 1999 eagle transporter.
This is the best image I could find. It would be best viewed from a full profile.

Well...I guess everyone is intitled to their own opinion...When the Avalanche was first introduced..your right, it was ugly...but it does grow on you...so much so, I bought one....It is very functional and and every space is usable...Drives like a Suburban, handles like a Tahoe, and has an interior that blends with the driver....Everyone needs to drive it and then see if you have the same opinion you had before...I changed mine and enjoy it very much...

I use my Avalanche off road on a farm, with some pretty rough sections.
Plastic is very rugged and does a super job of protecting the truck's body. Brush, rocks, small trees do not affect it!
I think it was design for this purpose vs. trying to look cool.
Also, the Z71 suspension works very well. Friends with Rams, F250's, and Land Cruisers have trouble in sections where Avalanche breezes through.
When I first saw Avalanche thought is was heinous, but now I think it looks great, and get a bunch of compliments.
