Pitman Arm

I own a 95 Chevy 1500, 2WD 350 and it has a shimmy in the front. All the bushings and balljoints have been replaced even the wheel bearings. I noticed that there is about a 1/2 inch gap between the pitman arm and the steering housing where it is mounted. Is that the reason for the shimmy?

The pitman arm is pressed on so it will not touch the steering house. Can you move it at all by hand? Does it move up and down when someone turns the wheel?

with all the work done on the steering componets was this created by this replacement or you had a shimmy and just threw some parts at it!???


shimmy is for me a bad out of round tire ...seen this many times...If this occurs at some specific speeds the wheel weight fell off...


on very rare occations it may be the brake rotor...


If the pitman and idler arms are worn you will get wondering and possible shakes when going over a bump...

I think it's more to do with me needing new tires. It actually drove better when I put some more air in the tires because the pressure was very low. I just happen to notice that about the pitman arm and I was curious if that should be that way.

when you increase the tire pressure defects if any in the tire will cause you to feel it more.

uneven wear,out of round, belt damage...also the work just done must include a wheel algnment..

the pitman idler arms should not move more than 1/8 inch up and down at the joint...

I replaced the balljoints, upper control arm bushings months ago and had it all aligned afterwards so I'm quite that has nothing to do with it. I think it may be just bad tires. Like I said, I just happen to notice that about the pitman arm and just had to ask if that's how it's supposed to be because I've really never paid attention to it.
