cam help

I have a stock 65 289 in a 68 car and i was wanting to put a big cam in it. How much lift will work and how much duration @.50 would work. I wanted to go as big as possible without having clearence problems. Summit offeres a cam that is their name and has 234/244 @.50 and.520/.544 lift with lifters for 89.00 bucks or is this to much? Thanks in advance for the help, also would like to know if anyone knows the weight of these cars?

Automatic or manual transmission? Rear axle ratio? If auto trans, are you willing to change the converter?

You'll need to supply more information. The term "as big as possible" isn't good for a modification such as this. Changing cams is for a specific purpose, usually, to change the power band of a given engine. A "bigger" cam will also require "more" valve spring, particularly if this 289 started life as a 2-bbl.

If you just want "the sound" of a big cam, I advise you reassess what you want. A cam will change the performance significantly. If you include all the parts that compliment the larger cam, the performance will increase, as will the RPM range where power is "made". If all the parts that compliment it are NOT included, it will turn the engine into a seriois "dog".

I have a manual as far as rear ratio i plan to change it also to somewhere around 350-373. I plan to add headers and for starters edelbrock intake, 600 holly,mallory dist,accel coil to get it broke in good. Later on i plan on putting my 177 cid weiand blower on it that runs about 5lbs of boost. The engine started life as a 4barrel and i was just trying to get some kind of idea what clearence i had between valves and pistons for lift. I am running a 302 now with 456 lift ,[email protected] duration and wanted a little more in the 289

you are prob looking at 303 a.b.c.d.e.f. roller cam to much cam with not good values will pull throw the heads so match cam with good values and spring tiny

Rule of "thumb" is to keep lift under .520" without checking valve-to-piston clearance.

If you're going to install the blower FOR SURE, I would wait until then to change cams. A "blower" cam is called for, but with only 5 lbs. of boost, something with small overlap will be okay, even if not "blower specific". You might consider a flat-tappet solid version of Comps's XE series. We've used a few in small Fords and they LIKE it. Keep LSA around 114 for the blower.

I'm not sure what Tiny was driving at. Can anyone interpret?
