97 Achieva 3.1 AC
I smell antifreeze in the cab when I adjust the cab temp. It seems to go away if I leave the temp control alone. It has been happening for a long time and I've never noticed antifreeze on the winshield or had to top up the coolant. Is there a valve in the system that could be leaking only when I change the cab temp? Or am I hallucinating and should just change the heater core and get it over with?
Thanks!

yeah your heater core is most likly the cause here. not an expensive part just a PITA to change.
also the fumes from the antifreeze is toxic to breath! :eek7:

Thanks for the reply,
I bought a new heater core a long time ago actually, but was unconvinced that it was really the problem. I was also a bit unsure of the heater core itself (a GM part). The pipes are sort of crimped onto the core body with a rubber gasket in between. It is fairly easy to rotate these pipes at this junction. I noticed this because the spacing between the pipes was wrong initially. Maybe this is normal but I'd hate to go through all that work and have it leak! Has anyone noticed this before? I wouldn't be surprized if that was the place where the existing unit is leaking.
Speaking of all that work; if anyone could point me at some directions for changing the heater core in a 97 Achieva 3.1 AC I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
jb
