service engine soon light

My service engine light came on.I checked to see what was wrong.A message came up that showed evaporation emission control malfunction.The associated code is P0440.My question is what does this mean and can my Blazer still pass inspection or do I need to correct the problem.I don't drive the Blazer very much other that to haul stuff.Feel free to email me at [email protected].

First step is clear code and see if it comes back.

Your car will not pass inspection if you live in a emissions state. Clearing the code might work for a short time but if the fault is still there it will come back very soon, and will come back immediately when the inspector hooks up the car to the inspection machine. EVAP problems are not hard to fix once you get familiar with your cars system. There should be a an evap system directory on a sticker under your hood, or purchase a Haines repair manual for about $20. from an auto store. Most of the evap problems are related to a purge solenoid malfunction or a broken or clogged evap line near the evap canister. I had two Nissans with clogged evap lines near the canister from moth nests. If you have any other codes repair the evap codes first.

Thank you for the response.I did have a vent selonoid valve replaced in May of 06 a steel line between the gas cap and tank replaced in Oct.07.I really haven't driven it very much since I leased my 09 Toyota Corolla in June when gas went over $4.00 a gal.Howard

Gotta' disagree with the haynes / chiltons call. They should have a round hollow binder, so you can hang them in the [library], tear a page, read, wipe, flush.
