Hard Shifting Transmission

Hi All!
I have a 1987 Grand Marquis 5.0L with Auto Tranny. It ALWAYS had a "hard shift" which I believe is a mechanical shift (throttle pressure) from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. Is there any way to "smooth" it out? Fluid is always full (although not too full) with a change every year or so with a filter change. I understand they are all this way and was wondering if there is any improvements that can be made. Thanks....MB
