How can i tell if my 24C transmission on my b16a is lsd? I think it is a CTR tranny or at least that was wat i was told when i bought the car. Need to know asap becuz if it is not lsd i might sell it.

Is it hydraulic? If its cable it never came from a CTR.

Speaking of LSD... the Si tranny I just picked up turns both axles in the same direction... is that awesome?

I didn't think any Si's ever came with LSD... but then again, my DX tranny will spin both tires on a launch... so meh.

As far as your tranny being from a CTR, Frodo is right, if it's cable, the CASING didn't come from a CTR... the gears still may have. You can swap the gears from any B-series trans into any other B-series trans, with a few exceptions. That includes the LSD...

The odds of that having happened are highly unlikely tho.

You can tell if you have LSD by jacking the car up by the front cross member, and turning one tire... if the other one turns in the opposite direction, or doesn't turn at all, it's an open diff. If the other one turns the same direction (forward or backward) and you can't have someone else put their hand on it and stop it while you're turning the other side, then it's LSD. (Or a locker, again, highly unlikely.)

If the tranny is not in the car take a look at the axle holes. If in the middle of the differential you see a large pin running through, then its not an lsd.

and now... the next question...

I popped both axle nubs out... checked... there is a pin running through the middle, which supports the spider gears... yet, for some reason, with both nubs in, I can't make one nub turn w/o the other one turning in the same direction... there is no visible damage, though I will drain/check the fluid at some point... hopefully there is no chunks.. shavings are fine by me, as long as they're not like corn flakes lol.

This tranny only had 92k miles on it.. and the motor/tranny was pulled w/ the car still driveable... just front end damage from a meeting with an object more solid than a CRX Si.

Sorry OP, I'm kinda jacking your thread here... but it's related.

Its in gear correct? Maybe you just need more torque.. spinning an axle by the tire as a huge amount of leverage. Could be a chunk of something though.

Any reason my DX tranny spins both tires on a 7k launch?

The Si tranny isn't in the car anymore... I can spin the input shaft, and it spins both tires... if I spin one of the axle ends, the input shaft spins, and so does the other axle end... if I rotate it the other direction, it goes about 1/3 turn before it picks up the other axle nub and they start spinning together.... meaning that I can spin either nub back and forth in any gear about 1/3 of a turn before it picks up the other side and they spin together with equal force.

I'm gonna try to put a wrench on each nub and see if I can make them spin opposite each other.

Still wondering why my DX spins both tires... it was stock when I got it, and I can't afford an LSD for that POS tranny...

Also there is no such thing as a 24c transmission. It will be a y80 or s80, but that doesn't mean its necessarily from a ctr.

I just checked it and it actually says s4c and some numbers (s4c-XXXXX) on one stamp and L3 plus some numbers on the other stamp (L3-xxxxxx). I was told from the previous owner that it was hydro to cable?

Ohhh...yea i raised up the car like wat dropzon3 said and spun one of the tire, and they spin in
different (opposite) directions. So does this mean my car is not lsd???

Yes, sir, you are indeed lacking the LSD. It's not a big deal, a good many of us are.

Is your motor twin cam? I thought L3's were D-series... maybe I'm wrong.

Christ

Yep... pretty sure the L3 doesn't go w/ the B16... therefore, unless someone spent alot of money to make a plate for it to fit, you got ripped off.

I'm pretty sure, if that person said your tranny was from a CTR, they were lying through their teeth to you...

Would you mind posting some pics of your engine bay, even some cell phone pics would be fine.. get a closeup of the area to the left of the header, it's a 1.5x1.5 inch square w/ something like D16 or B16 on it.

I stand corrected... I'm not really sure then what tranny it is.. You could take that serial number to a Honda dealer, they could look it up for you.

Take them the one w/ the barcode over it, and take them the engine serial number too, they can tell you if they're matched, and what they came from.

FrodoGT

The L3 is indeed a d series tranny without a shadow of a doubt. They probably peeled the sticker off the old one and put it on. The s4c is a b16 tranny, and only came with an lsd in the jdm equivalent.

Christ

/confusion.

Now that I'm not confused anymore... still a good idea to take the serial numbers to a dealer and find out what they came from.

wow that's messed up!!

JDM EQUIVILANT?????

They made the tranny in japan as well, but there it was available with an lsd.

"B16B (Hydraulic):
S4C (LSD)

The transmission found in the Civic Type R is highly sought after and very rare. Its gear ratio's are identical to that of the B16A's but has a stronger limited slip and dual synchro's in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. Expect to pay between 1000-1200 for a genuine CTR transmission because they're rare and well worth the price. Its also worth mentioning that these transmissions are Hydraulic type."

So this quote is stating that it does have lsd? I jacked up the car again, spun the wheels and they spun in different directions. This means that I have no LSD right.

No, its stating that the civic type r had one, there are a few different s4c transmissions.

that suxs. i guess mines not lsd than.

FrodoGT

Not likely.

Christ

Once again, no. If your wheels (pointed straight forward) spin in two diff directions, then you don't have LSD.

I'm still trying to figure out why both of my tires spin though...
