Okay so I own a 2003 Envoy XL I am the only owner ... It has 66,000 miles on it and I will have to say I am tired of putting 1000.00 every other month into it :banghead: Last month it was the Rear Air Suspension compressor.... before that the Fan Clutch and the list goes on and on and on! but the problem now is~

I was driving home the other night on the interstate and my speedometer stayed at 40mph then it slowly dropped to 0 even though I was going at least 65 mph but... okay .... it not working properly but its not major so I can deal until i get the money to fix it.. The next morning I get in it and go to work no NEW issues... But on my way home the Ck engine light comes on!!!

Will the Speedometer make this happen or do I have more serious promblems?? I have no more money to sink into this money pit but its not worth 50cents! at this point so really cant trade it in either! This year alone I have put almost 5000.00 in to this truck where do I draw the line!

Please help me !!!

I'd drive it to an auto parts store and have them hook up a OBD code scanner. This will let you see what trouble code(s) are causing the CEL to come on.

If the problem lies with the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) then yes it could be the reason for the dead speedo and CEL.

BTW, welcome to AF albeit under not so happy conditions. Sorry you've had such bad luck with your truck, though it's hard to believe that a new fan clutch cost $1000 (a slight exaggeration?). Anyhoo, a trusted mech/tech is invaluable in these cases. You may be paying out the wazoo, but at least it'll only be one time.

Yes the Fan Clutch cost me $989.76 but I had it done at the dealer ship because I could not find a mechanic that would do it for me.... So I was just plain screwed...

I will take it up to auto zone and see if they can read the error code i didnt know they could do that. I called the dealership and they want 75.00 to put it on a computer!

Slap me silly...no wonder you're pissed. But at least if you know what the car is telling you, there's less chance of them screwing you by saying ANYTHING that's plausible yet expensive. Knowledge is power.

The thing that really upset me with the fan clutch is the dealership said they knew there is a problem with that fan clutch and they have made a new one but they will not recall the old one... that really peeved me! you know I expect things to go wrong no car is perfect but geesh! I love the truck its a great suv but i could do with out the costly constant repairs!

I would question how they arrived at that price, the labor is under 2 hours book time and the part is around 400.00!!!

kinda too late at this point I checked two other dealerships and it was all within the same price. that was fixed back in April... I have not had a chance to take it to have the computer read yet maybe I will get that done tomorrow.

Might I add I had researched the problem before taking it to them ... We had onstar at the time and when the light came on they told me the problem was the fan we knew by the sound of it it was stuck on high.... and the truck stayed cooler than norm... so when I took it to get the tags renewed a couple days later not relizing that the service engine light would make me fail they printed out the error codes so I came home and researched them on the internet ... so when I took it in I told them I wanted the fan clutch replaced end of story nothing more nothing less they tried to get me to let them run dianostic tests on it and I said no... just do that if it does not fix it its my problem not yours... and of course it fixed it so I was right...

but all water under the bridge! Cant go back now... :shakehead
