Fuel pressure drop

Okay i have a 2001 GMC Safari 2wd 4.3. The van will turn over and depending on the day will start after quite some time of cranking.

i have checked the fuel pressure and when the key is turn to the on position the pressure will go to 55 psi then immediatly drop to zero. If i turn the key to the off position and back on a few times the pressure will sometimes hold on 55 psi, but will bleed off with in a few minutes.

The fuel pump also makes a horrible sound when first turned on usually.

Is this the fuel pump or pressure regulator and does this vehicle have a pulsator.

I also took off the fuel return line while i was chekcing the fuel pressure and while i was checking the fuel pressure there was no fuel coming out of the return line and i did not feel any pressure from the return line while i was cranking the engine.

We'll i thought i would advised anyone who cares of what it took to fix my problem.

I removed the fuel tank and removed the fuel pump and sending unit. I found a small hole in the line that runs from the top of the fuel pump to the sending unit. I replaced the fuel pump as a unit and fixed the problem. the fule tank removal was not hard at all, even with me being the only one doing it.

FYI.

Thanks for the follow up.

Was it an accordion line that failed? I always felt a little suspicious of those.
