Rough Idle

Lanver 2002 ES - 96K Miles

Just recently (about a week now) the idle on the car has become rough. It doesn't matter whether it is cold or warm it's rough. At times it also feels like it is going to stall but never does. It has never had a tune up and was wondering if that could be the cause? It does get regualr oil changes, tire rotation, balance and alignment and transmission maintenance. The check enigine light is NOT on. I have read about the ECM but when I'm driving it never revs up or does anything weird with RPM's. However, when I start the car in the mornings (typically cold) the car does jump to HWY RPM's and then idles back to rough. Almost as if I was stepping on the gas when I started the car (but I wasn't - it's a 2002 not my dad's 1972 4-barrel Ford).

Any ideas of where I could start to troublshoot?

I would suspect the Idle air controll valve usually mounted around the throttle body
