99 GMC Safari Fuel pump keeps going bad

We have a 99 GMC Safari. The fuel pump keeps going bad. This is our third one in 4 years. Each time it goes bad it is just a few months past the warranty.:banghead: What could be causing this? Why would they go bad so soon? The first one we got at a discount parts house that has a reputation for bad electrical parts. The second one we got from a better quality parts place. This totally surprised us when it went bad. Help??!? This is an expensive and frustrating cycle to be in!!

I've never had a bad one-- use only OEM replacement A/C Delco or Delphi parts. Was the wiring harness connector burnt or melted or replaced at the pump?

Fuel pumps are submerged in fuel tank with gas around them to cool the electric motor. I try to never let my gas tank drop below 1/4 and I would never never run it dry as the electric pump would have no cooling. You did not mention if you were aware or not of this and I'm sure some other readers are not. I do not have a personal preference on manufacturers. Just out of curiosity, did you drive a lot on the last 1/4 tank of gas previously??

The newer fuel pumps come as a module- along with the fuel level sender- and have addressed the concern of being surrounded by gas by having a canister that surrounds the fuel pump that is filled with the returned fuel from the pressure regulator- so running near empty is no longer a concern on these systems- which started about 1997 or so- Haven't you ever drained a fuel tank- only to have that big bowl of fuel come out with the fuel pump? The first one I did, I spilled it out on the floor....it was on a '99 Yukon.

Yes, the wiring was replaced each time. We are still scratching our heads over this.
