Is it necessary to use genuine Toyota parts for things like oil and air filters, sensors, plug wires, etc.? Or can I use other brands? I have been using Toyota parts but they are so expensive! Does it really matter so much?

Thanks for any and all replys.

The short answer is no. Using non-dealer brand parts to replace typical components will not affect your engine OR your factory warranty as long as they are manufactured to the OEM specifications (usually written on the box) or SAE specifications. However, some OEM parts do have longer life spans (ignition coils come to mind) and so for parts that are a PITA to replace (steering racks and fuel pumps?) you might consider going with a genuine Toyota part. The corollary to this is that most aftermarket parts do come with lifetime warranties, so when they do fail you can just get an exchange.

Really obsure parts will require a trip to the dealer or the junkyard/used parts store. Hope this helps!

Thanks alot for all that info.

Also, just one more question. What about that red coolant the dealer puts in? Is it any different or better than the green stuff? Thanks again!

If you use green anti freeze it will soon turn brown. There's a thread about why this happens somewhere on the Camry Forum. I believe it has something to do with the chemical salts used in the green and their reaction to aluminum. I would go with the factory Red IMO. You can buy it in concentrate or 50/50 blend.

As for parts I generally stay with OEM and have a good working relationship with the parts manager at my local dealership. I found the Toyota oil filter gasket and interior filter construction superior to the Wix brand I was using. I agree with using OEM ignition parts and wiring. I would stay with Toyota recommend spark plug but would buy them from an auto parts store.

You should use the coolant type that is recommended in your owner's manual (no mention of vehicle year). Green was typically used pre-1994(?). I ran extended life green in my '92 Cam, recently went to the Prestone global and have had no issues whatsoever. I've had the same radiator in it since '97. I'm not being an advocate, just my humble experience. I'll repeat...use what is recommended, especially if your vehicle is still under warranty.
