Just started doing this intermittently. Seems like it's not down shifting from 3rd or 2nd to 1st and when I stop at a light it shudders and stalls.

No check engine light.

Any suggestions ?

Could be the idle air control motor.
if you can tell it's going to happen apply the brake and give it gas. It it stays running my money is on the IAC.

At first I thought that, but if I stay on the gas while stopping it does downshift and will idle without stalling.

I would clean the EGR valve and if the problem stops replace it. This should set a code.
Use a can of carb. cleaner and spray along the intake and rubber hoses. If the engine smooths out you have a vacuum leak where the spray hits. These will normally cause rough idle.

Ok, well the engine runs smooth at idle when in nuetral and when put into gear. It's when I run it up to 50 or so and go to stop is when it will stall unless I give it gas and it downshifts then it will idle normally.

I was hoping there would be some easy troubleshooting check of the tranny before I take it in the the shop. Fluid is normal, Up Shifts fine.

Is your shifter on the floor or on the steering column. The ones on the floor have some problems with the wiring fraying and causing problems. This was covered in the bronco forum.

Shifter is on the column. I have some time this wknd. I'm gonna check all the connections and wiring. I suspect something in the wiring as well, as we had a hurricane that brought a bunch of rain and I was forced to drive in it right after that.

#8 COP usually always fails if I hit any major water...
