95 SE - Torque Conv?

I have a 95 SE, 3.1L, 90,000mi. About 2 years ago, I had the transmission replaced. Since then, the acceleration has never been like it was before. In fact, it sux. Either from a standstill or while already at speed. I put my foot into it and there is nothing there.
I talked to a guy at an auto parts store and he said that they put in the wrong torque converter. What is the probability that an incorrect torque converter could cause this and would it cause other shifting or driving problems?
There is no CEL, no hesitations (like a fuel, air or ignition issue), nothing else appears faulty. The problem really began after this trans install.
