I think the boys in this forum cant handle the car in your signature, but I like the 1969 Firebirds I'm not sure what generation they were. You can see a white one on the chase in Bullit, it passes McQueen by like three times at different locations.:D

Yeah that always had me confused, that white Firebird and the green Beetle, they passed both of those cars like 3 times going down different the same road. It was like instant replay at different camera angles.

I like the last generation Firebird

I'm gonna have to say third gen, not only because I have one, but because of the turbo anniversary which was, and is one of the fastest production cars made.

My good Friend Wes, running 12.00 seconds flat at the shootout !!

I'm respondind to the gentlean that say the 3rd gen is best looking and fastest production firebird.. well for one the super muscular look of a 98+ Ws6 with Batwing and the thick spokes smoke the old 3rdgen.. though the 3rd gen was hot ..as far as fastest productin.. you need to keep up wit the times in 01-02 Ls1 were inplanted with some Ls6 parts.. a recenttest of an 01 Ws6 fully loaded with 2 people in the car and no track prep yeilded over 10-15 13.01 t 13.08 times.. i do not recall the 89 making it outof the 13'sat all maybe 13.3 was its officail time and the 99 Ws6 without the Ls6 mods did 13.5 consistanly a Formula 1le stipper Ws6 did 13.15 in99 also as tested by Popular mecanics.. so your old bird is not as fast .. unless you modded it and even then.. H/C/Nious and nothing else would put the Ws6 in about 11 flat with much ado..and that with a 75 shot.. the Ls1 responds masively to low shot of nos.. becuse of it superior brething cabaility
210 cc runner stock 2.02 intake and 1.60 exhaust.. do a heads and cam job and this car is a hoover vacume

I believe this thread was merely about which gen the person posting was partial to, and I am responding to Malet. This is a forum and something to share objective views with others that have the same interests. I do not need to "get with the times" as you've stated and am well aware of the 4th gens capabilities. You can quote me as I say hereI'm gonna have to say third gen, not only because I have one, but because of the turbo anniversary which was, and is one of the fastest production cars made.. So read a little more careful before you go and step on someone without seeing this was not a war, but a very good thread to view.

Yeah baby, 77-78 are the best. My friend just bought a 77 T/A. That thing is sweet. He's got a rebuild 455 CID and a TH400 ready to drop in her as soon as we get some decent weather. Right now it's got a 400 with a TH350 and a shift kit - it's pretty quick but even a mid 90's camaro LT1 will beat it.

Being a lover of all Firebirds, I have to say that the second gens are my favs. IMHO, you can't beat the looks of the '70-'74 Formulas and T/A's. The T/A's of the SnB years ('77 & '78) were pretty hot, but the performance was lacking when compared to their earlier bretheren. And while the '79-'81 cars may not have been as nice, I've grown to love the "shovel nose" Birds... so much so that I own one.

If I ever have the $$$, I'd love to pick up a 77-78 TA, preferably black and gold just like the one in Smokey and the Bandit. actually my favorite is the sd-455 low 13's in the 1/4
they were first rated at 310hp then moved down to 290 because of some cam issues, some of my other fav are 67-68 birds, 70-73 and 77 & 78. i own a 76 with a 428 in it also. :-D

Yup! sure did! its a 68 428, 4 bolt mains, 390hp 462fpt, 10.75:1 compression, only came in full size cars.

i had it bored 30 over, hot tanked, forged pistons installed, new rods, bearing, cam, had the crank grinded, roller rockers, ported 670 heads, headers, torker manifold, 800cfm avs thunder series carb.

just got it in the bird and broke it in, havent gotten a chance to drive it yet, still waiting on the electric exhaust bypass system which will be here tue, then it will be ready to drive :lol2:

new specs
432 cI
11.5:1 compression
somewhere around 500hp estimated

PWMAN

well its more like 11.3:1
but i just rounded it up :-p

actually i think i can run pump premium with NOS octane boost
i hear NOS makes the best, so ill see how it does.

comp cam, xtreme energy
290 Duration
390 lift

i dont feel like getting the rest of the specs, i just know that its pretty lumpy on my engine, we broke it in and i couldnt believe how big the cam sounded.

PWMAN
12-22-2003, 07:49 AM
No way. My dad had a 383 stroker with 10:75:1, it was on octane boost and the timing was so retarded it ran like crap when it was cold and always hesitated. You are going to need some type of higher octane gas. Like you can mix 5 gallons with every tank, it doesn't have to be 100% race gas.

98GPGT
12-22-2003, 01:03 PM
I like the look of the "smokey and the bandit" ta's. They had the 400's and they looked sweet ass, although their performance stock wasn't as good as later generatons. I think the 4th gens looked so sweet though. They looked tough, i think they looked much better than the camaros the same year too. Pontiac knows how to buld an attractive car. Now an attractive suv? thats a different story.

PWMAN

Compression ratio (http://www.macdizzy.com/compress.htm)

????? It also is saying you can run 92 octane with 13:1 compression, yeah thats right. Now, my dad's 383 had a very mild cam, so it's dynamic compression was higher than yours will be. [email protected] was 218 on my dad's 383. Um, the cam you said(extreme energy) should be a split duration cam. Also it has more than 390 lift, should be more like 490.
OK, I just got out my Comp Cams catalog. There is no 290 duration. There is a 284 and a 294, thats advertised duration. What counts is duration at .050'' lift. OK, for the 294 one it has 250/256 [email protected], lift is .519/.524. Yeah thats a huge cam. Does this thing even idle? LOL You probably won't have near the problem we had. Your dynamic compression will be much lower than static. You should be fine with the Octane boost. That link you gave was worthless, it isn't very specific at all. If I were you I wouldn't post that link anymore, I mean 13:1 compression on pump gas iron heads? Please. Plus yeah now that I think of it, it doesn't specify if this is on iron or aluminum heads. Aluminum block makes a slight difference too. You have both cast iron.

428_Firechicken
12-22-2003, 09:44 PM

Well, all extreme energy cams have split duration and lift, meaning the intake/exhaust have different patterns. Like for example a high energy series have single pattern cams-like 218/218 and .454/.454 lift. An example of extreme energy is 212/218 duration intake/exhaust and .447/.455 lift.
Plus, no extreme energy cam has .490 lift on the intake or exhaust, and none have 290 advertised or @.050 duration.

Yes but probably with aluminum heads. You can run a full point more compression with aluminum.

no, i just didnt feel like looking up the specs on it, i just rounded them out, i know plenty about the engine, just not all the cam specs off the top of my head.

now if you want to get all technical here are the specs

274/286 duration (advertised)
.488/.491 Lift
110 lobe seperation angle

happy?

PWMAN
12-23-2003, 08:02 AM
OK, so you have 230/236 [email protected]. Thats not a huge cam, 2 steps up from the one in my dads 383. You are definitely going to have trouble with pump gas, even with octane boost. We only ran about 4 degrees TOTAL advance, not initial. Total in supposed to be like in the 30's, LOL. That was only with 10.75:1 compression. And it still pinged with octane boost.

Umm, not sure. I just remember it is an orange bottle, that you can get at Auto Zone. It definitely helped, pinged a lot less. We couldn't back the timing off any more, it wouldn't have ran at all.

Well, it's kinda too late. A couple months ago, the water pump belt slipped off and he drove for 10 minutes without cooling. Locked it up. It sucked, cuz it was the fastest thing I ever drove. 425+ HP on race gas, when you could turn up the timing. 12.6 in the 1/4. Now it just has a built 350, not near as fast but still pretty quick. We use it for towing, thats why the 383 had such a mild cam. It was quite a sleeper, its a rusted out 73' GMC 1 ton truck. I took it to the track just for laughs. With the 350 it only gets high 13's. All it has is flattop pistons and an RV cam. About 9.5:1 compression. Oh it has 4:10 gears and a 14 bolt corporate axle, practically bullitproof drivetrain-TH400 tranny too. The only problem was it weighs 4500 pounds, and it's hard to get traction because it has an open diff. That 12.6 was on slicks.

I know all about nitro-methanol.

Blackcrow64
01-14-2004, 11:28 PM
Well the third gens have gotta be the best lookin overall.... but the 98-02 style is pretty aggressive lookin from the front.... I donno its pretty much a toss up, but if you could mix a third gen and fourth gen it would all be good. Now if ya wanna talk engine wise oh we all know that the almighty 3.1L takes em all with a blazin 17.6 @ 75 mph  ha what a joke that engine is, when I get a 350 for my car I'm gonna have a bonfire with that old engine. But, I think the 3.8L in the Turbo Trans Ams is the best ever. I mean to run 12.0's is good, but to run 12.0's from the factory. Its just one more reason to call the third gens the best generation. But thats just my opinion.
