Operating temperature?

I just changed my thermostat because my car was having a hard time staying under 90 degree for the operating temp.

However now it seams it can't reach 90 anymore, it stays at around 75 or 80 ish (can't really tell because of the way the gauge is made)

Car is a 99 cavalier 2.2 OHV automatic

Thanks!

Operating temperature is 190 - 220 degrees. It is possible that they sold you a t-stat that opens at lower temps. The average t-stat opens at around 195 degrees.

It was written 180 and 44mm in the back of the thermostat. When I swaped it with the old one it said 180 and 44mm has well.

I would bet that since your from Canada that the guage is in Celsius. Its humbling to be reminded that the internet covers the world and not just Minnesota!

So 180 degree Fahrenheit stat would be 82.2 degrees Celsius.

The OEM specification is a 180 degree stat so I stand corrected on that.

If the gauge reads about 80 degrees C. than I would say that the new stat is working correctly.

O and out of curiousity, what could happend if an engine "overcools"?

It has the potential to stay in open loop which will give you poor fuel economy, and poor heat out of the vents. Thats the two I can think of.
