1988 Lesabre Cruise Control problems

I have an 88 LeSabre with 201,700 miles. It runs great and get excellent gas mileage, but the Cruise Control doesn't work. When I turn it on it says Cruise on the dash but when I try to set speed it doesn't work. I have read other posts from years back but have seen no resolutions. Can anyone help?
