Transfer case question

I have a 1994 jeep cherokee sport with a 231j T-case and was wondering what year jeeps did that fit because I need to change mine and have a few chances to get a newer and older one that works. Thank You...Tj

Any t-case between 91 and 96 with the same engine, transmission configuation, will bolt right in with no changes at all.

Many earlier ones had disconnect front axles The only difference between a disconnect and non disconnect t-case is the addition of a vacuum switch on the disconnect version. Not really a big deal at all, just different than you have.
Any t-case after 95 will have a different rear output shaft, seal and drive shaft arrangement. These t-cases will bolt right in but they will require a different rear drive shaft. I think the later version (96-01) is the better version and would recommend that if you can find a later t-case and driveshaft, you should use it. The later version doesnt use the DS yoke as a seal like yours does so you can remove the DS without fluid leaking everywhere. The newer ones also tend to leak at the rear seal alot less than the older version. But, that up to you. If you want everything back exactly the way it is, you are safe with any 91-95 with the same engine size and tranny.

As long as it has the same engine/transmission combo as yours. It also has to have the same rearend as yours. There were two different rear ends offered, the Chysler 8.25 and the Dana 35. The 8.25 has a slightly longer pinion so the rear DS will be shorter on those Jeeps with an 8.25. If you intend to grab the DS from something, make sure its from a Jeep with the same rearend you have.
Sorry to complicate this. I should've mentioned this but I wasnt thinking about the different rear ends in relation to the DS.

I think you may have to change input shafts. The spline count is the same (23) but I think the length of the input shaft is different.
