Why does the headlights go out?

I have a 07 Dodge Caliber with Daytime running lights and I have noticed when I turn the left directional light on the left headlight goes out and the same happens when I use the right directional light (The right headlight goes out) Headlight goes back on when the dierctional light goes off.
Other Calibers do this also I see..
What is the reason for this?

Don't own one but that sure does not sound normal. Maybe a multifuntion switch going bad?

Easier to see your turn ind on that side if the headlamp is not illuminated.

jbp53 has it right.

Dodge does this on all of its newer models...even the pickups. Their reasoning is that with the headlight off, the turn signal does not get 'lost' in the glare from the brighter light of the headlight, which is easy to do in bright sunlight.
Of course, if the headlights are turned on (instead of in DRL mode) they do not turn off with the turn signals. Again, Dodge supposes that you turn your headlights on when it is dark out and the turn signals WILL stand out from the headlights in the dark ecause of their amber colour.
