Trying to program a remote

My 96 ford explorer won't go into learning mode when I do the on/off 5 or 8 times. I gave in and went to ford and they tried and had no luck either. They were nice enough not to charge me but they said it would be 200 to 300 to diagnose the problem. Is there anyone that has some suggestions on how to fix this problem. Thanks
