Hiway fun....who's the ricer

Not much of a race but I had a laugh anyway. I was going home from work and I was at the last stop light heading out town onto the hiway. Nice cool summer day windows down sunroof open. I was in the left hand lane waiting for the light when I hear a rev of a V8 engine. I glance over and notice somebody with his friends in Daddy's new chevy truck w/ extended cab.
"What the wing for? Keeping your rear wheels to the ground? you know you have a FWD" he tells me as I can hear his friend giggleing in the background.
"No it came this way from the factory, thats a nice truck ya got there" I said
"V8, twice the power of a little 4 cyl" he sez with a smirk and laughter erupts from within the truck.
Such hostility towards the little car. "You have good math skills" is what I wanted to say but I just smiled and let him enjoy being the man in front of his friends and waited for the light.
We both took off normal and he stays next to me till about 35. I had just put the clutch in when I hear "See ya, ricer". I hear the hesitation of his auto tranny down shift.
Well that was uncalled for, I chuckle a little rev match release the clutch and floor it. I stop his pull when his rear tire got to my front tire and I hit my power band. I look over I give him a smile and a wave and let the supercharger do the talking, by the time I hit 85 he was 2 cars down and had given up. I slowed back to my cruise speed of 70 mph and kept an eye on my rear view. He stayed about 8 cars back.
I have a nice 15 mile ride home and he stayed his distance most of the way. I guess he was waiting for the next 2 mile straight coming up. I look up and notice hes begining to gain on me. Seriously..... a ricer fly by. I upped my speed to 80 and waited. When he was about 1 1/2 cars away I downshifted to 3rd and floored it again, supercharger screaming as he got to my rear quarter panel. I look in my side mirror and you can see his friends pointing jumping in their seats trying to get the truck to go faster but it just won't. I just had to put my hand through the sunroof and waved bye again.

Lol, I love the idiots like that (and in Texas, land of the truck there are plenty). I would have done a sick burn out just to drive the point home if you ever got next to them at another light.

Hahaha, I had a similar story to that when I only had my SL and a guy in a V10 Ford Truck tried giving me grief and then proceeded to lose to a n/a 3.0L V6.

Yeah, especially the ones who think V8 is automatically faster than I4. The video of me racing my friend's old RS camaro (now also owns a stage two balt) proves otherwise.

I got to race an RS at the drag strip. I had just gotten HPTuners and was logging my first drag tune. I had been running mid 14's on street tires. We lined up and I ran 14.1 to his 14.5.
Back at the pits as I past by I heard his friends say "There goes your Cobalt" and they laughed.

How old of a camaro are we talking about? Most rs camaros were v6 cars.

Got into a similar situation with the S-10 after I had finished competing at the strip. Some high school kid apparantly wanted to show off in front of his girlfriend in some old 90's Dodge Ram. Boy that was a mistake on his part...
As we made our turn he immediately got up next to me and gunned it, I just gave him the piece sign and stepped on the gas, and like you said, I let the supercharger do the talking. Bye bye Ram.
Those V8's they put in full-size trucks can move those things pretty quick nowadays, but its not going to hang with someone thats tuned well with forced induction.
Have you messed with Torque Management at all with HPTuners? I have the program as well and thats something I've been trying to eliminate out of my auto trans. When I eliminated it completely through the Engine section though the truck's knock sensor immediately picked up detonation. What gives? Does eliminating the timing retard require more fuel or something because of the spark advance?

My buddy's Duramax runs low 12's. He doesn't have much done to it, either. I've been in the truck when we have killed brand new Corvettes light to light. Be careful of full size turbo diesels.

Thats true about those V8 trucks, cams nice tune and a few bolt ons make for one very quick truck. Theres an S-10 at the track I go to whos running low 13s, haven't asked what hes done to it yet, only seen him twice and he doesn't stay very long.
About HPT I have a manual tranny and the first thing I did when I got HPT after calibrating the MAF, was remove TM, adjusted my PE for an AFR of 11.3 upped the spark advance by 3 degrees across the board. Then I proceeded to eliminate knock and maintain 11.3-11 AFR during WOT. I'm not sure if I had knock before that since I eliminated TM right away and boosted the timing table first time out.
As a disclaimer I've only had HPT for about 4 months so what I'm about to type should be taken with a grain of salt and reseached to make sure it will work.
I would compare the actual AFRs before TM removed and after with timing retard eliminated. See if there is a change and correct your AFR to match previous. I would also check my EGT after correcting the AFR to see if I've had a large increase in temp. A big increase here would indicate the engine is running hotter than before and more fuel may be needed to maintain current spark advance and take care of any potential knock caused by a hotter engine. This is just what I would do your results may vary

He needs quite a bit done to it to run LS2s.... Chip atleast, exhaust, etc. Duramax's are not 12 second cars out of the box. I have raced a Duramax with a chip + more and he ran a low 15.
We need to mess with timing, but have no wideband yet so we cant really monitor the AFRs effectively. Damn.

lol Living dangerously I see. The wideband was the first thing I bought. You can calibrate your MAF sensor without a wideband till you reach PE using your LTFTs and STFTs. But once you reach PE all that becomes disabled. Do you have a histogram set up for the MAF using LTFT? If not I'll send y'all my cfg file. It'll make it easier to calibrate the MAF...

Well, I can tell you what I know it has done. I know it's got a 4" exhaust, and I know his truck was the test-mule for EFI Live on that platform. I'm not sure what all that does, but he does have some crazy stand-alone-type features that he's always messing with on some LCD-screen system he has on the dash. I know it at LEAST controls boost, but I seem to recall him making changes to timing and crap like that too.
I know the turbo is stock.
And like I said, I've been with him when he's smoked Corvettes...and I've seen his timeslips. The thing still runs 13's with a horribly slipping transmission (Allison 1000). In order to kill that trans, it's GOT to be making some decent power. Those things are typically good until you double the HP/TQ, on the average.
I think stock is 300hp and 520tq. He's probably making around ~580hp and ~850tq. The timeslips I've seen are 12.5's at around ~104mph.
Fast enough to smoke an EVO or STI from a stoplight. And it's funny as hell in a truck that big too. lol.

Turbo diesels are a completely different animal, you'll be coughing up black smoke once they get that Bully Dog dialed in. I guess EFI is trying to complete with Bully Dog.

Yeah Wideband definately should of been a first on your list there MZR. I use Innovate Motorsports LM-1 and it works pretty well for me.

What is PE, and LTFT, and all these acronyms? I just got HP Tuners a few weeks ago and I'm not that deep into it to know what you mean.
The torque management you adjusted, was that in the transmission section or the engine section? Apparantly when I used to mess with Hypertech tuner it already wiped out the torque management in the transmission part, but the engine Torque Management is still there.

PE is Power Enrichment in the VCM editor under Engine then Fuel Control,
LTFT is Long Term Fuel Trim found when scanning, or logging files. It should already be loaded for scanning. You can also set up the boundries in the VCM editor under Engine, fuel control OL&CL.
I went to both areas, trans and engine. Under the Engine tab, Torque Management, General, ETC Limits (ETC stands for Electronic Throttle Control) and also in Spark Retard. Use caution in here, things tend to rip apart if your not careful...
