Battery Terminal

Today I stopped the car briefly to collect my mail and when I tried to restart it was completely dead. I had the ignition turned on and I noticed that when I banged the door shut it would briefly come alive. I managed to restart using this method and get it back to the house. It was late and dark but I then opened up the hood to take a look - and the positive terminal was almost completely off the battery post. I thought it has become loose but when i tried to tighen the nut it would not move. Seems like the band that goes over the battery post has streched. Even the negative feels a bit loose now.

So my question is - is it possible to replace the terminal only or is it normal practice to replace the whole cable.

you can buy just the ends at auto parts store, they have 2 types, the lead style where you cut end of wire of and insert it under a cap and tighten it down and they also have the band/strap style where you just cut the old strap where the hole it and fasten it to new one

stop in to auto zone they will put it on for you if you just need cable ends. usually if it's the pos. side of your battery is coroded is the alt. is putting out more than battery can take.

Thanks for the info guys. Got it done today. For some reason they did not show the terminals online - only the cables. In the dark it was hard to see but actually it was the ground that had come out. The + was a bit loose also - I undid the nut and then tightened it and everything appears to be okay now.

I guess in due course the + will also work itself loose permenantly.
