DPFE sensor price

93 Mercury GM 108,000 Check engine light is on. Local Ford dealer gave quote for dpfe sensor and egr service , $550.00

Auto Zone has the part listed for $54.00.

Advance has it for $128.00.

Ford did not list a seperate price for the sensor.

Why the big difference in price? Does Advance have that much better product?

The sensor is a little hard to get to and I don't know what EGR service is unless its cleaning the ports, which I'm not sure I want to try. $550.00 seems a bit excessive. Any one else had this done at a private shop?

Thanks

A lot of people do it themselves EGR valves I would suggest Ford as some people don't always get the proper part at the parts store.
An independant shop can do this for you just specify Ford Parts. Basically you don't pay if the light is still on. If a mechanic does it he will get decent parts store parts. I've seen Napa making parts deliveries to various dealerships when getting parts. Note aftermarket parts are not all equalivent. Ford says to clean out the openings and connecting hoses.

Before replacing the sensor, make sure the passages under the air intake elbow is clean. These passages clog up and cause problems. It is not a hard job, and if you are careful removing the gasket, you don't need to buy any parts. We use a screwdriver and hammer to remove the built up carbon and carburetor cleaner to soften it anc wash it clean. The part that needs removed is the throttle body elbow. It has the intake hose attached to it and kas the throttle linkage. It is not that hard and easily accomplished in an afternoon for the novice diy'er.
