1997 Jetta - unpredictable starting especially when wet

I have a 1997 Jetta that is unreliable when it is cold and wet or just wet.

The plugs and wires have been changed, but the car has decided to continue to quit. This last time it quit after a heavy rain.

It just cranks, with no coughing or sign that it will start. Distributor has been changed as well.

My theory is now that the water is not draining away from the ECM due to clogged drains along the fenders. I did have this problem on a 1986 Jetta a long time ago, but wasn't thinking it could repeat again. Surely, engineers would never have left a vulnerable design to be repeated!

Anyone have an experience with wet ECMs causing poor performance or non-starting?

replace the ignition coil. go to napa or oreilly or carquest and get one there about 80-100 at the dealer
