i found my exaust leak right side exaust doughnut gasket the one that connects the collecter from the manifold to the Y-pipe is completely gone 1 question, there is a metal sheild that covers the gasket is there a point to it being there or is it just in the way and how much of a tedious pain in the ass is this going to be i have about 6 inches of clearence from one of the body braces to the frame rail and the studs for the manifold are rusted beyond salvage
this is going to be a real "fun" ordeal isn't it

remove the Y pipe and replace the gaskets and hardware...drill out the old bolts or use a torch [if your good enough] and then reinstall..
the Y pipe should be checked for defects...
a muffler shop can do this in 1/2 hour...might take all day if you do it..

the cat should not be melted, and excessively coated with debris....flush out with water hose, check the flow for restrictions....
If the cat has too heavy a coating on it , soaking the cat in an acid bath will remove the surface contaimination and restore some of the lost ability to control hydrocarbons..
I did this with a cat and it cleaned the metal very good in about 1/2 hour of soaking .then fush out with water..

i have a feeling that i will probably have to replace the cat i found the cause of my horrible fuel mileage the passenger side fuel injector on my TBI unit is fuel dumping when i saw it i couldn't help but think "overly reminecent of a leaky faucet" like it was spaying and dripping and the injectors are not able to be replace one at a time i have to replace the injector unit, correct?
and that explains the smoke from the exaust leak

If the injection is repaired and the cat is finally allowed to light off and burn out, it might be fine. Hydrocarbons will not etch out the rhodium and palladium coatings (but some acids will). As long as any fuel residue is allowed to evaporate, it might be recoverable. If not, you can always replace it later, but it's worth waiting.
