99 yukon denali column shift lever

Hello all,

Lately my truck's shifter would be rather tought getting out of park to drive, after moving it around up, down what not it would come out of park, I thought the brake pedal lock may have had somthing to do with it.

Now the shift lever has about an Inch or so of play in it, linkage feels on point put the play makes it hard to tell.

Any ideas??? as i would hate to have to replace the whole steering column like the old days
